The International Chess Tournaments

Katalog englische Flagge

The Brighton Internationals were the launch pad for the unprecedented activity which led to no fewer than three World Chess Championships taking place in the UK between the undoubted titans of chess: Kasparov, Karpov, Short and Kramnik from 1986-2000. On an often shoestring budget the organisational team utilized the possibilities inherent in the separate chess nationhood accorded by FIDE, the World Chess Federation, to each of England, Scotland and Wales to produce fields which qualified as 'international' under FIDE regulations.

The luminaries who competed in the seven internationals included Jon Speelman and Nigel Short, both of whom went on to participate at very high level in the World Championship - Speelman reaching the serni-final of the Candidates tournament and Short going on to become the challenger to Kasparov in 1993. Also, Dr John Nunn, the multiple Olympiad gold medallist of 1984, and British champions such as William Watson and Julian Hodgson. Others who went on to become Grandmasters or Candidates included Ion Tisdall (Norway), John Fedorowicz (USA), Murray Chandler (New Zealand) and Johann H Jartarson (lceland).

Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm. He was awarded the OBE for services to chess in 1985.
