A Gambit re-issue of the definitive modern work on pawn endings, written by the same authors as the award-winning Fundamental Chess Endings
This book provides a thorough course in endings with just kings and pawns, from the simple to the highly complex. Armed with this knowledge, the reader will also be able to tackle other types of endgame with greater confidence and certainty.
Many interesting and beautiful positions are included, and there are test positions for the reader to solve. The authors follow the rigorously logical conventions introduced by John Nunn in his famous series of endgame manuals. This has necessitated a phenomenal amount of new analysis of theoretical positions to assess precisely the merits of each and every move.
* A comprehensive and authoritative guide to the most fundamental type of endgame
* Includes puzzle positions to test the reader's understanding
* Makes use of computer software specifically geared to pawn endings
* Logically organized in user-friendly fashion

Review of previous edition (publisher: Everyman):
To understand pawn endings we have to go back to the fundamental basics of pawn endings with the classic opposition and than clime up with the specific breakthroughs exact calculations and the reciprocal zugzwangs. This work from the German GM Karsten Muller & Fide master Frank Lamprecht is a immensely practical endgame work with a collection highly interesting pawn endings that are excellent analysed. Nowadays computers assistance has become common in endings but the so easy looking pawn endings are very difficult to handle with these machines even with the latest developments as Hiarcs 7.32 & Ken Thompson CD-ROMS it stays for a large part own brain work. For example chapter12 with the theory of the corresponding squares and exact calculations are extremely instructive! There is a good balance in exercises from easy to very complicated. Many positions are worked out in great depth! A large amount of material is quit modern but I am pleased to see some classical endings from great players like the pawn expert Nimzowitsch. A small part of the book is devoted to the selected composers where the reader can find an excellent collection of the great Nikolai Dmitrievich Grigoriev. The book is logical organised with a clear contents crash course Index and foreword from John Nunn. A good advise from the both authors :If you are able to solve all exercises correctly while laying in your bed in the evening you had better give the book away;if not,a chessboard will certainly help you!
Conclusion a highly fascinating endgame book!
Highly Recommended!!
