Another in the series of highly regarded instructional books by experienced Oxfordshire chess teacher and author John Walker. With such a seductive title this book is bound to sell well, and Walker paints a familiar scenario in his introduction: "The game is over quickly, and you can wander around the room with a self-satisfied smile upon your face whilst your team-mates are still struggling with their own games...". He goes on, however, to sound a note of warning; to expect to win in the opening is foolhardy in the extreme, and even when it appears there may be a winning tactical opportunity, it has to be calculated with great care.
That said, Walker presents a straightforward résumé of opening 'dos and don'ts', along with an introduction to common tactical themes. There are 34 well-chosen illustrative games (where classics mingle with obscure miniatures) and two sections of revision tests. Regarding these, we have one quibble: in the final section of tests, surely it would have been better to hide the solutions on the overleaf page following - rather than the facing page - to avoid inadvertently seeing the answers. Apart from this minor blemish Walker is, as always, excellent value and a sound choice for the aspiring youngster.
