The Panov Attack lies at the intersection of the Caro-Kann, Nimzoindian, Sicilian, Scandinavian, Semi-Tarrasch, Ragozin and English openings. It often leads to the important Isolated Queen Pawn position, one of the subtlest middlegame structures. Both brilliant attacking play and profound strategic maneuvering can be found side by side in this opening.
The White side has attracted most of the top names in chess, from the classical Alekhine and Botvinnik, through the major figures of the post-WWII era including, Gligoric, Jansa, Knaak, Petrosian, Shamkovich, Spassky, and Velimirovic to the contemporary stars Belyavsky, Dolmatov, Gulko, Hebden, Kaidanov, Nunn, Plaskett, Polgar, Short, Wolff.
Some stars are not averse to sitting down with the Black pieces. Among the advocates for the defense, including virtually anyone who plays the Caro-Kann for a living, are: Adianto, Bronstein, Fischer, Flohr, Kamsky, Lobron, and Polugayevsky.
But just look at who has been found on both sides of the Panov! Alehine, Adams, Anand, Christinsen, Gipslis, Hort, Korchnoi, Larsen, Portisch, Smyslov, Speelman, Sveshnikov, Tal and even Karpov and Kasparov!
In any event, an understanding of the Panov Attack is essential to anyone who plays either side of the IQP position. In this series of monographs, National Master Eric Schiller presents through research in the form of fully annotated games which illustrate the most important ideas of this opening and the middlegames which arise from it. This first volume covers all of the lines typified by e7-e6, except for the lines where Black reacts to a capture at d5 by recapturing with the knight.
