This book contains 116 games played by Edgard Colle during his lifetime, in which he used the Colle System, or variations deviating from the opening in an attempt to avoid the Colle. The games are arranged so that it can be utilised as an opening study manual, with games in variation sets, and analysis indicating popular lines, and moves which result in better or less desirable continuations. Many brilliances are included, as well as games in which Colle was not at his best, useful to students wishing examples of good and bad play in the variation. Colle plays a wide range of strong opponents. He was handicapped by poor health, but by nature sought attacking lines, even risking material in order to attempt an attack on the opponent's king. The author, Adam Harvey, sought the games in books, magazines, newspapers and correspondence with others in an effort to locate out every available game. His research has provided us with a most valuable insight into the development and practice of this opening. Colle was one who had an opening named after him who actually studied the line carefully and utilised it as often as practical. The author has included a comprehensive set of tools to make the book as useful as possible, including contents pages which list every opponent, the event and date, within sections based upon move continuations; a complete bibliography; and a chronological list of all the games.

This is a collection of 116 games in which the Belgian master, Edgard Colle (1897-1932), played, or attempted to play, the opening system that bears his name. Several of the games included are rare and have not been published before, except in contemporary magazines. As well as being an anthology, I have set out the book in such a way that it should also prove to be a useful companion to opening books on the Colle System. Most commentators encourage students to study illustrative games, as they are important when learning how the strategic ideas of an opening are consummated in the middlegame and even the endgame. Rather than simply arranging the games chronologically, I have divided them into sections covering the principal variations and have attempted to emphasise the main themes and motifs throughout; the reader will notice some repetition in this respect, but I feel that this will only help reinforce general ideas. Using this approach, it will be easier for those wishing to study this opening to make comparisons - seeing at a glance the ways in which Colle and his opponents handled similar positions.
Most of the games included conform to the two distinct main lines (with Black's queen's knight on either c6 or d7 after the initial 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 e3 e6 4 Bd3 c5 5 c3, or a variation thereof). Subsequent sections comprise games where Black makes varying attempts either to neutralise or side-step White's plan. As a result, not all the games in this book adhere strictly to the Colle System proper. However, these will also be beneficial to the student, as many of these defences will surely be encountered. Nor are all the games in this collection Colle's greatest. Rather, I have aimed to make this book as comprehensive as possible; consequently, you will find a number of games in which Colle did not play at his best. Nevertheless, Capablanca's statement that "people who want to improve should take their defeats as lessons, and endeavour to learn what to avoid in the future" can also be applied to the study of another person's games, particularly when concentrating on an opening system which this person has developed. Therefore, these games too will be as instructive to the aspiring Colle System player as the many brilliancies that are also included.
For their assistance in the production of this book, I should like to take this opportunity to thank the following people: Michael Clapham, Jean-Marc Rathe, Nick Weingold, Ken Whyld and especially Tony Gillam, whose generous help has been invaluable.
