Beginnt der Titel mit 'play the ...', dann handelt es sich nicht um eine vollständige Darstellung einer Eröffnung, sondern um ein Repertoire - Buch.
Mit 'play the queen's gambit' stellt Großmeister Chris Ward seine persönlichen Empfehlungen für Weiß im Damengambit vor. Das Pflichtprolautet 1. d4 d5 2. c4. Ausgevon dieser Stellung findet man gegen jedes Spiel des Schwarzen ein Konzept für Weiß.
Im angenommenen Damengambit 2. ... dxc4 zieht Ward 3. e4. Er räumt ein, dass man sich damit auf schwieTerrain begibt und verwendet ungefähr 50 Seiten des Buches dafür, alle Erwiderungen des Schwarzen zu berücksichtigen.
Im zweiten Kapitel finden wir 2. ... e6 3. Sc3. Nun werden 3. ... f5, 3. ...Lb4, 3. ... c5 und 3. ... Le7 kurz betrachtet, ausführlicher geht es um das orthodoxe Damengambit 3. ... Sf6. Hier schlägt Ward die Abtauschmit späterer Entwicklung des Springers nach e2 vor.
Halbslawisch umfasst etwa 30 Seiden größten Anteil beansprucht das Anti - Meraner - System mit Dc2 und g4. Im vierten Kapitel finden wir Slawisch mit 2. ... c6 3. Sc3. Ward bespricht 3. ... e5, 3. ... dxc4 und 3. ... Sf6 4.e3.
Seltene Abspiele werden im letzten Kapitel zusammengefasst. Hierzu gehören auch Albins Gegengambit und die Tschigorin - Verteidigung.
Das Buch ist sehr gut gemacht, aber jeder Leser kann nur selbst entscheiob ihm dieses Repertoire zusagt.
