The first in a series of new and innovative books, clearly presenting the key aspects of each chess opening in a fresh, entertaining and accessible way.
The aim of this series is to provide the essential knowledge to play the opening, while revealing the current thinking of the world's elite players. 'First Moves' leads readers through the basic opening moves; 'Heroes & Zeroes' gives the best and worst performances with the opening: Tricks & Traps' reveals how you might catch put your opponent; and What is Hot' pinpoints the very latest ideas from the world's elite. A detailed table in the style of ECO is given at the close of the book, summarizing the main variations with assessments.

The counterattacking Gruenfeld Defence is a favourite opening of the legendary Garry Kasparov. In this book, Kasparov's friend and confidante, International Master Michael Khodarkovsky, lets us into the secrets of Kasparov's opening preparation, explains the most important elements of Gruenfeld strategy, and gives an up-to-date survey of the critical lines.
Michael Khodarkovsky is a respected coach in America, where he has lived for many years after emigrating from the Soviet Union.

The author of an opening book tries to lift a veil on the opening's secrets, illustrating his ideas with the best games, or game fragments, he can find. Every author is hoping that his work will be understood and appreciated by his readers. Moreover, he hopes to see an increase in popularity of the opening among chess players of all levels. The author of this book is no exception.
The book is not set out in the traditional way, describing the opening in strict order, line-by-line, system-by-system. Here, each chapter is presented as a separate thematic article. However, the end result will hopefully be that you have a more conceptual approach to the opening you have decided to play.
The book starts quite literally with 'First Steps', running through the basic moves, and the basic motivation of the opening.
Then comes 'Heroes and Zeros' -great wins (and losses!) with the opening. In this chapter you will find thoroughly analysed games, and the thoughts of players who have enriched the theory of the Grünfeld Defence. Here I would like to thank my friends Garry Kasparov, Boris Gulko, Leonid Shamkovich, Gennadi Zaitchik, and Sam Palatnik for their exclusive contributions to this book.
'Strategy', gives an overview of two of White's main systems, looking at the principle lines and theoretical battlegrounds.
'What's Hot' takes you through some of the (currently) most popular lines in the Grünfeld, offering the latest theoretical opinion on these crucial systems.
In Tricks and Traps' I show how strategy and tactics combine to achieve the ultimate goal -winning the game.
An important element of each opening book is a set of test positions. In Test Your Skill' there are several different types of position to analyse. Alongside the usual tactical problems, there are also more complex situations that test your strategic understanding. (Don't worry, there is also an answers section.)
And finally, if you can't find the analysis of some theoretical lines in the descriptive part of the book, don't hesitate to look at 'Details', where lists of variations are displayed with assessments.
Before you read on, I would like to quote Grandmaster Boris Gulko, whose remarks characterise the Grünfeld Defence perfectly: 'If White plays precisely and logically, he should get an advantage; while for Black to get a good game he must rely on occasional tactical chances. Fortunately, such 'occasions' occur quite often'.

Le2 0-0 9.0-0 cxd4 10.cxd4 Sc6 11.Le3 Lg4 12.d5 Se5 13.Tb1 Sxf3+ 14.gxf3 Lh3 15.Txb7 Lxf1 16.Lxf1 Dd6 17.Lxa7 Le5 18.h3 Da3 19.Le3 Tfb8 20.Txb8+ Txb8 21.Lc4 Dc3 22.Lb3 Dc7 23.Kg2 Lf4 24.Ld4 Le5 25.Le3 remis (S.7 f).
