This is a roadmap for the King's Gambit player. The emphasis is on a positional handling of this venerable opening, complete from the White point of view (which is not to say tactics have been understated).
Every known source has been sifted to present the strongest play by both sides, and all known sideline moves for Black are delved into, in order to fully arm the player of the white pieces. Several new books and a proliferation of KG ideas and games in the past eight years warrant this revised third edition in which the number of illustrative games has more than doubled over the previous edition.
Both accepted and declined variations are covered in detail, including critical rewrites in the important Fischer (1. e4 e5 2. f4 ef4 3. Nf3 d6 4. d4) variation, and the Kieseritzky (1. e4 e5 2. f4 ef4 3. NB g5 4. h4 g4 5. Ne5), the backbone of our KG.
Bob Raingruber and Lou Maser are old hands at this opening and their two previous editions (with GM Larry Christiansen) prove they must be doing something right.

A whole slew of OTB and postal King's Gambit games have been played and analyzed in the international chess arena since the advent of the Second Edition of The King's Gambit As White. Most prominent of the opening's recent practioners is GM Joe Gallagher. Quite a few of his and other games have followed lines espoused in our book. Reflecting this, we have taken care to incorporate all relevant new information in the Third Edition, including numerous apropos games-yielding over twice as many as in the Second Edition!
Not surprisingly, new questions in the Problems sections have been added. Also, investigation of two novel Lesser Declined Variations (ch. 16)-2... Qf6 and 2... Nc6 has been undertaken. And, in the King's Gambit Accepted, perhaps more original than critical is Master Kevin Burnett's 3... c5 (cf. the Lesser Accepted Variations of ch. 10) in which fertile ground for fresh ideas awaits praxis by today's stalwart gambiteers. At press-time 3... Qe7 has reared its "ugly" head as well, requiring a serious look.
In addition, a few notable corrections have been attended to. For instance, a complete rewrite of the Fischer Variation line from Diagram 4C-1 has occurred. The critical Berlin Defense of the Kieseritzky Variation (cf. Diagram 3F-4) too has been renovated, after having been put under a cloud for awhile. And, occasionally, poignant illustrative games are given to reflect current trends and testing, which diverge from the beaten path lines of the text. A good example of this, again from the Berlin Defense (from Diagram 3F-1), is seen after 6... d6 7 Nd3 Ne4 8 Bf4 Qe7 when 9 Be2 has been tried in place of the "prosaic" 9 Qe2.
No opening system can be expected to go under the microscope without some new light being shed thereupon. Certainly, this has been true of the King's Gambit in the past few years. In a way this validates the opening itself, to be sure, but more importantly it allows for increased understanding of this complex gambit. We believe that the ebb and flow of new ideas in the King's Gambit will continue to enhance the material in this roadmap book for a good many years.
