Großmeister Krassenkows Buch über den Offenen Spanier (definiert durch die Züge 1. e4 e5 2. Sf3 Sc6 3. Lb5 a6 4. La4 Sf6 5. 0-0 Se4:) war noch vor dem PCA-Weltmeisterschaftskampf in New York erschienen. Die von Kasparow in der zehnten Partie (in Schach-Report 10/1995, Seite 41) angebrachte Neuerung 15. Sb3!! in der Saizew-Variante war dem Autor daher unbekannt; er bedachte Saizews 11. Sg5!? in einer theoretischen Übersicht mit dem Urteil "OK?*", was nach seiner Terminologie besagt, daß die Variante als für Schwarz zufriedenstellend gilt, daß diese Einschätzung aber unsicher und trotz vieler Analysen keineswegs endgültig ist. Die von Anand gewählte Fortsetzung 11. ... dc3: bezeichnete Krassenkow als die solideste Variante für Schwarz, viele werden dies nach Kasparows Opfersturm anders sehen. Daß die Variante Sg5!?, welche bei Krassenkow lediglich auf einer Seite untersucht wird, den Offenen Spanier insgesamt gefährdet, ist allerdings unwahrscheinlich. Zum Beispiel ist 11.... Ld5 (Ivan Sokolov) noch völlig ungeklärt, und selbst bei 11. ... dc3: sind noch viele Fragen offen. Krassenkows Buch ist sehr nützlich und übersichtlich; im Anhang finden sich außerdem 40 kommentierte Beispielpartien.
