"Paul Morphy was one of the greatest chessplayers of all time, and his games are still worthy of study. In this book, the author analyzes many wonderful Morphy games and crystallizes them into a set of principles for the opening, middlegame, and endgame."
- Grandmaster Patrick Wolff, two-time U.S. chess Champion, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess
"For the first years of play, any player must learn, rediscover, and understand the basic ideas and fundamentals of chess that are clearly illustrated by the masters. This book highlights some of the most important principles any chessplayer should know, and provides games illustrating each idea in its raw form."
- Grandmaster Tal Shaked, former world junior chess Champion

A First Book of Morphy illustrates the teachings of three great players with games played by the first American chess Champion, Paul Morphy. Morphy was the first known genius at chess, whose games were first to show the relationship between the attack and the positional features of center control, development, and king safety.
Reuben Fine was one of the two best players in the United States in the 1930s and '40s. Fine's textbook Chess the Easy Way distilled 400 years of accumulated chess wisdom into 30 principles, 10 each for the opening, middlegame, and endgame. A First Book of Morphy presents more than 60 of Morphy's games to illustrate those rules.
Cecil John Seddon Purdy, the editor of Chess World magazine, was an unparalleled chess teacher for novice and intermediate players, explaining the basics of winning chess in pithy, memorable words. The games selected for A First Book of Morphy demonstrate Morphy's constant search for moves that exemplified Purdy's most fundamental instructions.

007 Introduction

011 Part 1: The Opening
013 Open with a center pawn
021 Develop with threats
029 Develop knights before bishops
035 Don't move the same piece twice if you can help it
039 Make as few pawn moves as possible
045 Don't bring your queen out too early
049 Castle as soon as possible, preferably on the kingside
055 Play to get control of the center
063 Try to maintain at least one pawn in the center
067 Don't sacrifice without a clear and adequate reason

077 Part 2: The Middlegame
079 Have all your moves fit into a definite plan
089 When you are ahead in material, exchange as many pieces as possible, especially queens
095 Avoid doubled, isolated, and backward pawns
109 In cramped positions, free yourself by exchanging
113 Don't expose your king while the enemy queen is still on the board
119 All combinations are based on a double attack
123 When your opponent has one or more pieces exposed, look for a combination
127 To attack the enemy king, you must first open a file (or less often a diagonal) to gain access for your heavy pieces
135 Centralize the action of all your pieces
143 The best defense is a counterattack

147 Part 3: The Endgame
149 To win without pawns, you must be a rook or two minor pieces ahead
153 The king must be active in the ending
157 Passed pawns must be pushed
161 The easiest endings to win are pure pawn endings
169 If you are only one pawn ahead, trade pieces but not pawns
175 Don't place pawns on the same color squares as your bishop
183 A bishop is better than a knight in all but blocked pawn positions
189 It is worth a pawn to get a rook on the seventh rank
199 Rooks belong behind passed pawns
207 Blockade passed pawns with the king
