Here are 376 chess positions in which you can play a snappy continuation to win your opponent's pieces or force checkmate.
The examples have been carefully chosen and graded according to difficulty and are suitable for new players who know little more than how the pieces move.
Test yourself or work out the moves on the boards, whichever you like. It will be just as instructive and just as much fun. The answers are given immediately below the diagrams in order to make things as easy as possible.

In all the positions in this book White is playing up the board and is to move.
On pages 3 to 44 are positions where White can win a black piece or pieces. These positions are arranged according to the method White uses to achieve this objective. The method you need to look for is shown at the top of the page. If you are not familiar with terms like fork, pin, skewer, etc. then try reading Simple Chess Tactics (published by B.T.Batsford of London) by the same author as this book.
On pages 45 to 71 you will find more examples of White winning pieces by the same methods as before but the examples have not been sorted out for you, which makes things a little harder.
Snap checkmates in two moves are to be found on pages 72 to 96. It is very important that you learn to recognise the patterns of these checkmates.
The object of this book is for you to enjoy looking at some chess positions and to understand what is happening in them. This book is not a test. If you want to study the positions and try to work out the next moves, that is fine, but if you simply want to read the moves and explanations given, then that is fine too.
Before you reach the end of the book you will have extended your knowledge of chess and your ability to think ahead and to recognise the common patterns on the chessboard.
