In this, the second volume of a three-volume series, over 200 games of Canadian Grandmaster Duncan Suttles are analyzed in depth. This volume features games which begin with the "A" category of openings, using the opening classification system popularized by the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings.
Classifying Suttles' openings is no easy task. The reader will find many games described as "Unnamed Opening", which have in common only the signature first move 1.g3. The opaque intricacies of the "Suttles System" are explored in this volume, along with many epic games starting with the English Opening, which Suttles played for White and faced as Black. Many of Suttles' attacking ideas from the Closed Sicilian (coming in Volume 3) are seen here.
Another important series of games for the serious student are the "Rats" (1 ...g6) where White foregoes an immediate attack and proceeds more positionally with 3.c4. The strategic plans and tactics Suttles devised in this opening are as valid today as when they were played.
Most of all, this volume features many hard-fought, uncompromising and confusing games by one of the most original and fearless Grandmasters to have played the Royal Game.
Preface to Volume 2This, the second volume of the three-volume series of Canadian GrandDuncan Suttles' games, contains the games which begin with the "A" category of openings, using the opening classification system popularized by the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings.
The classification of chess openings is difficult, and doubly so for Suttles' games. After two Anderssen's Openings and a Polish Opening, the reader will enter the labyrinth of "Unnamed Openings", where White plays 1.g3. Only after many games will more familiar English Openings appear, although with many unusual ideas and twists-including transpositions into other openings. The games in this area are sometimes hard to fathom, but they are well worth the effort.
The line between Black and White can be blurry in Suttles' games. Readers who are interested in picking up ideas in the Closed Sicilian for White will find Suttles on the Black side of these positions, facing the English opening. Similarly, devotees of the Pirc and Rat will find many games in this volume where Suttles plays these defenses with colors reversed.
Those same enthusiasts will find much of interest when they arrive at the Rat games in the last third of this volume. Many of the games are of historical interest, showing how this opening developed, while others contain ideas and maneuvers which can still be effective today.
While some of the most interesting games will be found in full only in Volume 1, this volume contains some classic encounters:
Suttles-Johnson, Vancouver, 1984 (page 327)-Suttles' last tournament game as of the time of writing.
Suttles-Unzicker, Siegen, 1970 (page 334)-White may (or may not) have missed a win in this uncompromising and nearly incomprehensible game.
Miles-Suttles, Hastings, 1973/74 (page 433)-an exciting, dramatic game from start to finish, featuring a positional queen sacrifice and more.
Suttles-Reshevsky, Lone Pine, 1975 (page 453)-a beautiful win against the American legend, with White's 40th move alone being worth the price of admission.
Suttles-Barnes, Vancouver, 1971 (page 496)-in this classic game, Suttles is at his mind-bending best.
Burstow-Suttles, Vancouver, 1981 (page 543)-an epic encounter, which is all the more interesting because of the commentary from the "Masters Forum" participants in Canada's national magazine.
McCormick-Suttles, Seattle, 1963 (page 576)-a legendary game in the Pacific Northwest, for a surprising reason.
Rivera-Suttles, Puerto Rico, 1965 (page 607)-as nice a Rat as you could ever hope to see, at least from the Black side.
But it's all here: the good, the bad, and, well, you know the rest of it. All except the games in the other two volumes, that is.
