This book is based on a series of articles published by Rin Kaiho 9 Dan in Go Review in 1976 and 1977. The articles were translated by Joe Langdon and have been slightly edited for this publication.

In Come Up to Shodan, Rin aims at providing relatively weaker players with an understanding of the principles and tactics that will enable them to make a significant move upward in strength. He does this by means of a systematic and thorough analysis of three games played in the promotional tournaments for amateurs at the Nihon Kiin (Japan Go Association). By drawing our attention to various "points" and "mistakes" he shows us the general principles that guide proper play. The result is a useful review for stronger players and an extremely helpful primer for weaker ones.

This book is another in the series of books based on material from Go Review that Slate & Shell is publishing with the permission of the Nihon Kiin, the original publisher. Go Review was an English language journal published in Japan from 1961 to 1977. During that period it was the preeminent source of instruction about Go in English. Much of this material is of timeless value, and since the original journals are now difficult to acquire, Slate & Shell is making some of the best articles available in inexpensive volumes, such as this one. For information about other volumes, see the list of publications at the end of this book and our web site at www.slateandshell.com.

This book is based on a series of articles published by Rin Kaiho 9 Dan in Go Review in 1976 and 1977. The articles were translated by Joe Langdon and have been slightly edited for this publication.
Rin Kaiho 9 Dan has been one of the dominant figures in professional Go for many years. He was born in Shanghai, China in 1942 and was brought to Japan by Go Seigen from Taiwan in 1952, becoming a professional shodan at the age of 13. His first major triumph was winning the Meijin title in 1965 at the age of 23, defeating Sakata Eio 9 Dan. He has won that title nine times overall. Rin has also held the Honinbo title five times, first winning it in 1968, also from Sakata Eio 9 Dan. Another of his remarkable achievements is holding the record for participating in the greatest number of best of seven title matches in Japan. He continues to be a force to be reckoned with in professional tournaments, both in Japan and internationally.
