After a player has acquired basic knowledge on how to win or draw standard endgames, there remains the need to know the methods to use so as to be able to reach the basic endgames. In this book, Grandmaster Mednis teaches the skills involved in actual play of endgames, such as simplification, how to handle weaknesses, moves important to general principles, and often overlooked techniques. This book will help you convert endgame advantages into wins.

A fair amount of specific knowledge is necessary for successful endgame play. There is no way you can do well in endgames if you do not know which K + P vs. K endgames are won and which are drawn. Similarly, R & P endgames require at least the very basic knowledge of the Lucena and Philidor positions. This information is indeed available in standard endgame texts. Yet use of such knowledge comes as the final phase of your; endgame. The absolute need is to know the methods to use so as to be able to reach the basic endgames.
This is what the book is about. The aim is to increase your skills in the actual playing of endgames. The book starts with a discussion of proper technique in both relatively simple and complicated endgames, then goes on to the art of simplification, considers the questions of how to handle weaknesses, moves to important general principles and concludes with the overlooked techniques.
Most of the material in the book is based on my writings on endgames in magazines. As required, the material has been rewritten, expanded, corrected and updated. Sources have been the standard ones: magazines, books and personal contacts. As has been my custom previously, when appropriate, direct credit is given in the text. Of course, any errors remain my responsibility. I would appreciate your calling them to my attention.
