The English Opening is enjoying widespread popularity today. Along with this has come an explosion in the quantity of analysis devoted to this opening. The line of play following 3 e4 has been adopted by man of the leading Grandmasters. This study presents an up-to-date thorough analysis of current practice in the line, together with twenty annotated illustrative games.

In the middle of the 19th century a group of English players, led by Howard Staunton, introduced the opening move 1 c4 into tournament practice. This soon was given the name of the English Opening, becoming one of the most fascinating openings which presently can be seen at every tournament and at every level of chess competition.
The unique popularity of this opening grew out of the pioneering work which contributed new ideas to chess dogma. In addition, at its inception, it became the favorite weapon for those players who wanted to avoid the maze of well analyzed opening systems. And the course of the game creates strategically divergent positions which suit the exponents of both the tactical and positional play.
Thus it is not surprising that many of the leading players pay close attention to the developments in the English Opening. Some of them employ this opening regularly, while others use it only in important encounters. Others still adopt this opening as a surprise weapon and employ it only occasionally. The popularity and development of the English Opening can be accredited to many great masters who earned their recognition with diligent analysis and bold experimentation in tournament play. It is virtually impossible to name them all, but it should suffice to mention the names of Zukertort, Nimzowitsch, Reti. Rubinstein, Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Karpov, Korchnoi and Kasparov.
The recent years have witnessed a surge in the number of analytical works devoted to English Opening. Its various systems were seriously built on and enriched. A lot of new variations and strategic plans came into existence. The increased interest began with Botvinnik, who contributed many a valuable analysis and made it the main theme of his World Championship match against Smyslov in 1958.
And yet, one single book was enough to cover this opening as recently as the 1960's. Today, this undertaking would not be possible, hence this volume deals only with one variation, which is one of the most popular and controversial lines in modern chess.
The Flohr-Mikenas System in the English Opening 1 c4 Nf6 2 Nc3 e6 3 e4
White's last move was introduced into tournament play in the late 1920 's. The key role in popularizing this system was played by the Lithuanian master Viadas Mikenas and by the Russian master Salo Flohr who introduced many original analyses and ideas. Thus it is only fitting that this system bears their names. However, one must not overlook the contributions of the other pioneers; the likes of Nimzowitsch, Carls, Eliskases, Tartakower, Bogoljubov, Ragozin and Sokolsky provided the testing grounds for a successful introduction of the variation. Nowadays this system is applied by such famous players as Korchnoi, Hübner, Seirawan, Miles, Spassky, Hort, Christiansen, Yusupov, Alburt and Rogoff.
