This book covers basic corner patterns, or joseki, and discusses common sequences based on the 3-4, 3-5, and 4-5 points.
Play usually begins in the corners since it is easier to make territory there than along the sides or in the center. In most cases, playing in an empty corner or approaching an enemy corner is best early in the opening. The continuations that arise after approach plays can be extremeJy complex.
This introduction to joseki guides the reader through the maze of choices in such local operations. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study, but rather is a general overview of corner play - there are many joseki that this book just can't cover in the space available. In particular, the number of variations in complex joseki is curtailed. Many times, though, the book will mention a particular joseki that works well in a certain board position.
A word on technical terms used in this book - while we have tried to minimize the use of Japanese go terms, a number have been retained because of their use in the go community and the lack of adequate terms in English. Technical terms are defined when first presented, but we have included a glossary at the end of the book for definitions as needed.
The present work is based upon the 1982 publication of the Nihon Kiin's "Quick Study Series: Even Game Joseki Pocket Dictionary" and has been revised and expanded.
