Leonid Stein, Soviet chess grandmaster and champion, believed in "correct" chess. However, when faced with drifting into a draw against a weaker player or a lost game, he believed in RISK! His unrestrained imagination and creativity elevated his play beyond mere mortals. It was another genius, Bobby Fischer, who boldly challenged Stein to a match to be held after the Havana chess olympiad.

A most likely future world champion, and definitely a candidate, he unleashed his unbridled talent over the mightiest of chess players, but tragically, died in his thirties.
Stein's amazing ingenuity in attack and sacrifice is revealed in these dramatically annotated games.
Besides the extensive biographical section, his family photo album is opened for all to see his warmth and strength, and the mental prowess of the 3-times USSR champion.

Written by two who knew him well, the authors have analyzed the career of a super grandmaster for whom chess life moved much too slowly! Grandmaster Gufeld now lives in Los Angeles. Master Lazarev resides in Kiev, the Ukraine.

This is a book about an outstanding Soviet chessplayer, Leonid Zakharovich Stein. It describes his thorny rise towards the heights of chess skill, his triumphs and failures, his searches and discoveries, his disappointments and hopes, his friends and opponents.
The most important part of the book is Stein's best games. Certainly the 62 games, and several endgames, selected for this book hardly em-brace the richest creative heritage of the grandmaster. Yet, they give a comprehensive idea of the strength and uniqueness of his talent, and about his original combinative style.
The book Grandmaster Leonid Stein by E. Lazarev, published in Ukrainian in 1978 ("Zdorovye," Kiev), served as a basis for the first part of this work. In addition to the aforementioned book, the biographical segment has been expanded with more detailed information about the initial stages of Stein's chess path. The chapter on Stein's creative activity has been rewritten, a task which caused the authors to engage in labor-intensive research.
Until recently few games of the prominent grandmaster had been published. The chess press mainly covered the games played by Stein in the major All-Union and international tournaments. The authors possessed collections of all the tournament games played in the Championships of the Ukraine and the Sporting Society "Avangard" in which Stein had participated from 1957 through 1962. As for other games, we had to make do with the limited number of games or game fragments published in the various chess media. Stein did not save his own games.
Unfortunately, we could not find Stein's games from junior tournaments (except for one which had been in the personal file of one of the authors and is included in this book), nor games from competitions in which Stein had taken part while in the Army. That's why the early period of his creative work is modestly represented.
Some games in the first part of the book have been published without notes because they were of interest only to characterize Stein's play at the time.
The primary criterion in selecting the games was their quality. Yet, sometimes the authors took into account other considerations. The games that had a big sporting significance marked a milestone in Stein's biography as well as the ones annotated by him. We wanted any major tournament in which Stein participated to be represented with at least one example. In certain cases we had to confine ourselves with endgames: either we had been unable to restore the preceding moves or they were not interesting and not connected logically with the ensuing ending.
Certainly quite a few of the selected games are well-known to readers, but they will also find comparatively little known and virtually unknown works of the great master. All the formerly annotated games have been re-examined, and new annotations have been written. A considerable number of games have been annotated for the first time.
The authors' personal impressions of the meetings and contacts with Leonid Stein proved useful in working on this book. We express our profound gratitude to all relatives, friends and acquaintances for sharing their memories with us.
A special appreciation goes to the grandmaster's wife Liliya Yakovlevna Stein, who was one of the first readers and critics of the manuscript. She now resides in the United States. We would also like to thank Grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric for his contributions to Game #16 (Lvov, 1962) after all these years!
