With the enormous increase in popularity of the Queen's Gambit, there is an urgent need for comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the viable variations.
The Orthodox Variation offers Black the opportunity for a very solid game, and it requires careful study by White to avoid mistakes. The use of the Queen's Gambit in the World Championship cycle is certain to spur interest in this variation.

There has been a tremendous surge in the popularity of the Queen's Gambit in recent years. As a matter of fact, it has been doing rather well lately, winning all of the games in which it was employed in Informator 36! The ...b6 systems, the Tarrasch, and the Cambridge Springs have all seen monographs appear. But what about that old standard, the Orthodox Variation? Is it, too, due for a little consideration? I think that it is. It has never been refuted, after all, and with a little effort Black can achieve a very good game. Most players of the White pieces have forgotten all of those little finesses which are necessary if an advantage is to be secured. The well-prepared player of the Black pieces can feel secure in the knowledge that the, slightest mistake by White will yield equality, and even if White knows all the moves his edge will be microscopic.
Actually, the "common wisdom" that White can always maintain his opening initiative may be nothing but an old wives' tale. There are a number of interesting suggestions which have never been implemented, and this book contains many of them.
The variations have been chosen from Black's point of view (as with the Catalan and Cambridge Springs books in this series). Careful consideration has been given to many of the ideas which have appeared in the literature with little or no comment. I have tried to evaluate a lot of the !? moves in ECO and clarify some of the "unclear" positions. A few original lines have crept in as well. So all in all, this book constitutes a fresh look at some well-established material. I have included a chapter on handling the Exchange Variation, to spare the reader the necessity of purchasing an additional book in order to employ the QGD. It is by no means an exhaustive treatment, just the bare essentials needed to handle the lines where White captures early on d5. The lines have been chosen for ease of acquisition and exposition-It should not be necessary to remind any literate chessplayer of the heritage of the Orthodox Variation. Most of the "greats" have adopted it with considerable regularity. In fact, one of the attractive facets of the variation is that you probably have hundreds of annotated games with the Orthodox-look in just about any game collection and you will find them in abundance.
No matter what your rating, you can learn quite a bit about the nature of the middlegame and endgame by playing the Orthodox Variation, and it is sure to surprise and perhaps annoy your opponents, who may wish they had taken the time to study the variations contained in this book. After all, wading through ECO is no guarantee of finding the best lines, and in these pages you will find that the evaluations contained in ECO may not always be correct. For those wishing to compare my analysis with ECO, or who wish to update this book from Informator and Tournament Chess, I have adopted the system used in my Catalan book. Each chapter corresponds to one section of ECO code. Thus Chapter 7 is ECO D67, Chapter 9 is ECO D69, etc. That explains the presence of a Chapter 0. Due to space limitations, I have not been able to expound upon the glorious history of the Orthodox Variation at great length. Furthermore, there was no room to include annotated games. But as I mentioned above, you can find well-annotated examples in most treatises and game collections, with notes by players who are (or were), after all, quite a bit stronger than I!
