GO - The pursuit of Life, Liberty, Connection, Influence and Territory. Each player seeks to discover the strategy and tactics necessary to acquire the most territory. Ideally each play has multiple aims to threaten and/or succeed to create, destroy, expand, and/or reduce Life, Liberty, Connection, Influence, and/or Territory. THE ART OF GO - Finding the strategical and tactical maneuvers that equally divide a section of the grid with respect to the whole grid via the principles of war. OBJECTIVE - To help Go players: 1) Learn the basic language and elements of Go; 2) Understand what is happening on the Go grid: 3) Develop their Go analytical reading ability.
When speaking of intermediate level 7-8 kyu players, one refers to the class of skill that would be unbeatable when receiving a nine stone handicap from an amateur 1 dan. This is called the single figure kyu, and is one who has, in general, mastered the necessary tactical expertise regarding fundamental maneuvers while gaining confidence at the same time.
For that reason, it is an important base from which to move up to the 5-6 kyu level, so subject material has been collected here to examine the matter from various angles. Since an effort has been made to remain faithful to the fundamentals, the questions may be characterized as being terribly easy, but on the other hand, there are also problems that attack some blind spots. Therefore, it may be called a collection of problems that can be very useful for everyone in actual game situations.
In addition, all problems in this work have been brought into conformity with the Standard of "Black to Play." In total there are 144 problems, and answering 90 problems or more correctly gives one a passing score. Please use the Playing Strength Evaluation page at the end of this book for reference.
If one wrestles with these problems in a calm and collected manner, the distance to 1 dan will not be very far.
