The King's Indian is one of the most popular and electrifying of chess openings. Players such as Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov have found its appeal irresistible. Many openings give Black winning chances, but the King's Indian promises Black opportunities to win games 'sensationally'.

Zweifellos ein Qualitäts-Eröffnungstitel, aber leider vorerst noch ein Wrack. "Covers all lines with Nf3 and Be2", heißt es auf dem Buchrücken, doch dies ist nicht der Fall. Komplett wird das Werk erst mit Erscheinen (angekündigt in ca. 1 Jahr) des Ergänzungsbandes "The New Classical King's Indian". Korrekterweise sollte man also von "Band I" und "Band II" sprechen.
Hier eine Inhaltsübersicht des vorliegenden "Main Line King's Indian": 1. d4 Sf6 2. c4 g6 3. Sc3 Lg7 4. e4 d6 5. Sf3 0-0 6. Le2 e5 (nicht Abweichungen wie 6. ...Lg4) 7. 0-0 (auch 7. d5, 7. e3, nicht aber 7. ...ed4:, 7. ...De8, 7. ... Sa6 usw.) 8. d5 (auch Le3) 8. ...Se7, und jetzt diverses wie 9. Ld2, 9. b4 usw., aber nicht die Hauptfortsetzungen 9. Sd2 und 9. Se1.
Wenn Sie jetzt ein wenig verwirrt sind, lieber Leser, so beschweren Sie sich bitte nicht bei mir, sondern beim zuständigen Verlag. Obwohl es laut Vorwort keinen "natürlichen" Weg gibt, das umfangreiche Gesamtmaterial zu unterteilen, hätte man m. E. hierbei schon ein wenig sinnvoller vorgehen können. Und gerade die Varianten, auf deren Beurteilung ich am meisten gespannt gewesen wäre, sind erst für den Folgeband vorgesehen ! Ich habe etwas den Verdacht, daß der Verlag das ebenfalls noch auf dem Markt befindliche Nunn-Buch "The Classical King's Indian" (1990) schützen will. Dieses enthält die Abspiele nach 8. d5 Se7, angesichts der raschen Entwicklung der Königsindisch-Theorie wirkt es aus heutiger Sicht indes schon völlig überaltert.
Die Akribie von John Nunn (er zeichnet für knapp die Hälfte des Inhalts verantwortlich) ist ja hinlänglich bekannt. Ein Analyse-Fernduell mit Taimanow (ich nehme Bezug auf Taimanow-Fischer in Taimanov's Selected Games - eine Besprechung in Schach-Report 2/96, S. 75) entschied er prompt zu seinen Gunsten. Freilich wäre es hierbei zu berücksichtigen, daß mutmaßlich nicht ihm selbst, sondern einem bestimmten Schachprogramm dieses Kunststück gelang.
