After GM Tony Miles defeated then World Champion Karpov with the Polish Defense in 1980, there was renewed interest in this old opening. Kapitaniak presents the historical origins of the Defense and a survey of current theory. The author demonstrates that it is sound and quite playable, providing an attractive alternataive to other well-trodden paths. There are twenty five annotated illustrative games to present a complete picture of the opening in practical play.

In our days, modern chess theory is well developed, especially the opening stage of the game. Every player knows well how important the openings are and how many traps are possible in the early phases of the game. The most popular openings, such as, for example, the Ruy Lopez, the Sicilian Defense or the King's Indian Defense, have been analyzed well into the middlegame. To avoid studying all these long variations some players have been trying to find something original or they resort to a forgotten defense .
The Polish Defense belongs to the forgotten category, which has reappeared in modern tournament practice due to the recent games of British grandmasters and masters.
Following Tony Miles' famous victory over the then World Champion Karpov at Skara 1980, the opening theoreticians attempted to give a name to the defense essayed by Miles (1 e4 a6 2 d4 b5). and such names as St George's Opening, Baker's Deense or the Birmingham Defense have been prominent. This author does not question the enormous contribution of the British players.
but the given move order is nothing more but an adaptation of the Polish Defense to the King's Pawn Opening. As it is known, John Baker was probably the first person to play 1 e4 a6 2 d4 b5 with the Black pieces. However, we know only of two of his games played in a blindfold exhibition and it is this author's opinion that two games are not enough to name this defense after him. If we named every opening or defense after the player who first used it, most of the openings would be named after Greco or Lopez. This volume presents the current state of theory and practice of the Polish Defense, which should demonstrate that the Polish Defense is sound. It is hoped that this work will induce more players to use this defense and that it will find a permanent place in the tournament practice. Anyone who wants to employ the Polish Defense will be well advised to first study the strategic ideas behind Sokolsky's Opening (1 b4). Its conceptual affinity to the Polish Defense will enhance one's knowledge of positional and tactical considerations, which prevail in the Polish Defense.
