The authors of Cosmic Go and the Galactic Go series take you on an illuminating tesuji ride. Whether it is the whole board or just the corner or the sides, tesujis - those exquisite moves that bring harmony to the whole - are explored through one hundred and fifty problems and sub-problems. Here you learn about shapes and sacrifice. See how both professionals and amateurs use them and sometimes fail to do so. Hametes (trick plays) and their refutation will add extra spice to your games. Many new josekis, including the rarely analyzed five-five point josekis, are developed here for the first time in a book.
All Go players, whether their strength is seven-kyu or five-dan, will have plenty to learn and think about when solving these problems. Along with increasing the reader's appreciation for the finer aesthetics of the game, this book also will develop a sense of rhythm and intuition for the game that will stay with you for the rest of your Go playing career.

PREFACE
This is a problem book on tesujis - those smart plays that are always there on the board but that amateurs have difficulty finding. All of these problems arose in real games while I was studying with the professional author of this book over the last five years. Some of these situations can be found in our books Cosmic Go and Galactic Go, volumes I - IV (Volumes III and IV are forthcoming). This book on tesujis is very different from the basic books of Tesuji by James Davies from Kiseido Publishing company and Sakata's Tesuji and Anti-Suji of Go and The Art of Go Volumes I and II, all three from Yutopian Enterprises. While these books provide good reading problems, they are not drawn from actual games. We have tried to catch tesuji problems "in the wild".
The book is organized in the following way. Three or four problems are given with diagram numbers such as 1, 2, 3. These are followed by answers to problem 1 with diagrams 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and the answers to problem 2 with answer diagrams such as 2.1, 2.2 etc. Some problems may refer to one isolated corner, others to half of one side while still others to the whole board. Some problems are one of a kind, but in other cases, particularly in new joseki development, a whole series of problems are related to each other. They will be so marked. It is this sequence of related problems that makes this book on tesuji unique.
Even more valuable to amateurs may be the joseki continuations, side variations, trick plays (hamete) and a large number of new josekis. These involve 5-4, 3-5, 6-4 and even 6-3 points. You should employ these new strains that you learn here in your games and really learn them!
Please let us know your thoughts and tell us any errors that you find in this book. Otherwise, "Buen provecho"!
Advice to the Reader
Always read and solve one problem at a time. This is important since some of the problems are related and one problem may contain the solution to a previous problem. Also, use the board and the stones whenever you can. Finally, come back to the problems again and again and again.
