The Pirc Defense is one of the most popular defenses in modern international tournaments. Among its adherents are a host of "super" GM`s including Timman, Speelman, Seirawan, M. Gurevich, and Nikolic as well as dizens of other top GM`s and IM`s. Its dynamic nature appeals to all players who want to play decisive chess.

In our book we give a thorough analysis off all important lines, often giving more than one good line for Black to play. This is helpful to the serious tournament player, as it enables a switch of variations if a White improvement is found in one of the main lines.

In general, White`s strategy is essentially to from a pawn center behind which pieces are massed in preparation for attack. However, Black welcomes this as he intends to strike back in the center, keeping White offbalance while insuring active counterplay. In some cases Black hits White`s center with the pawn thust to e5, but in recent years lines in which Black strikes back with c5 have gained growing popularity. In any event, a lively struggle is likely with Black holding his own in both theory and practice.
