Preface
Dozens of chess books are being published every year, but during the past decade specific tournament books have only rarely appeared. The book on the International Chess tournament in Groningen happens to be one of these rare publications. Ever since 1972, the traditional chess tournament has been concluded by the publication of a book featuring complete coverage of the event. As you can see, tradition has been kept alive this year as well.
This edition is just as unique as the event that was held last December. Similar to the tournament itself, the book consists of three different sections.
Part one contains full coverage of the World Chess Championship. Rounds 1 to 6 and the semi finals of this knockout tournament have been played in Groningen, whereas the city of Lausanne hosted the final. Part two provides you with match reports on the women's candidates tournament. In part three you will get a proper view of the 36th international chess tournament in Groningen, consisting of several rating- and mini-tournaments on top of an imposing grandmaster tournament.
Because of the event's unique nature and in order to reach a broader audience, we have decided to publish the book in English. Both its size (about 350 pages) and its circulation (1750 copies) are records in the Groningen Tournament book history.
Still, there is one thing that has not changed: all participants receive the book for free. We sincerely hope that reading the round reports and the interviews, and re-playing the grandmaster games will give you a plenty of joy for many years in advance. Loads of pictures will contribute to remaining memories of this event, which has been unique for the entire chess community.
I am very grateful to my co-editors, the authors, the photographers, the translator and those responsible for lay-out and cover. Besides, I would like to show you my gratitude to all institutions and companies that have helped us with money and equipment so that we could organise this unique sports event. Without their support, we would not have been able to publish this book.
Groningen, never far away, always close to you.
I hope to see you again,

Johann Zwanepol, executive director
