Die vorliegende zweite Auflage dieses Buches scheint ein unveränderter Nachdruck der 1995 erschienenen Erstauflage zu sein. Darin stellt Sid Pickard in Zweispaltendruck und englischer Notation dankenswerterweise insgesamt 1022 Partien des ersten und bisweilen etwas vernachlässigten Schachweltmeisters Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) zusammen und damit die wohl größte Partiensammlung von Steinitz. 227 Partien davon hat der Autor auch nach den Angaben von Steinitz kommentiert. Eine der wichtigsten Quellen für Pickard dürfte dabei wohl das vierbändige Werk von Ludwig Bachmann „Wilhelm Steinitz" aus den Jahren 1920-1928 (Olms-Reprint 1980) gewesen sein, in dem schon 969 Partien gesammelt sind und das den Lesern darüber hinaus guten Einblick in die Biografie von Steinitz gewährt, während Pickard sich rein auf die Partien beschränkt, die im Übrigen nicht nur die Turnierpartien, sondern auch Trainings-, Vorgabe-, Blind- oder Beratungspartien enthalten. Verzeichnisse der Gegner von Steinitz, sowie der Turnier- und Matchergebnisse runden die Sammlung ab. Für eine spätere überarbeitete Neuauflage würde ich allerdings noch ein paar Seiten zur Biografie, ein paar Fotos, Auszüge aus seinen Artikeln, einige zusätzliche Diagramme und die Tabellen der wichtigsten Turniere als Ergänzung empfehlen, ansonsten ist das Buch aber bereits jetzt eine wichtige Quelle zum Schaffen des ersten Schachweltmeisters.
