The Slav is an excellent way for Black to meet the Queen's Gambit, and has been played at the highest level for over a century. Indeed, the very first game of the first recognized World Championship match began with the Slav! The opening has continued to be popular at all levels since then, and promises an interesting and exciting battle for both players.
This volume deals with all variations of the Slav, excluding the Semi-Slav. The author explains in depth the plans for both White and Black in the varied lines available to both players, so that after careful study the reader should be able to add the Slav successfully to his or her repertoire. Even the notorious Exchange Variation proves to have hidden resources that enable Black to sidestep White's efforts to retain his first move advantage, and the author analyses these in detail.
Many games are given in full, with detailed notes throughout, thus enabling the reader to follow the Slav strategy right through the middlegame and into the endgame. Besides being highly instructive, these games are entertaining in their own right.
Glenn Flear became a Grandmaster in 1987, and is one of England's fastest-rising stars. He represented England at the Dubai Olympiad in 1986, and scored a spectacular success at the 1986 GLC tournament in London, which he won ahead of 12 Grandmasters, including Short, Speelman, Larsen, Spassky and Nunn.
