You haven't heard of the Kan Variation of the Sicilian? You wouldn't know what to do against it? Neither will your opponents, if you study this guide from a young IM who has tested the variation extensively.
The Kan is one of the Sicilian's best-kept secrets. Yet it has been played by several World Champions, including Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer, Petrosian and Tal, and many of the top modern grandmasters, such as Anand, Kamsky, the Polgars and Ilya Gurevich.
Black adopts a flexible stance, and repeatedly obtains positions far removed from the standard Sicilian scenarios. Its practical sting is clear from a glance through this book - Black is ready to strike if White overextends. Those who face the Sicilian as White spend enormous amounts of time studying the Najdorf and the Dragon, but are frequently taken unawares by the flexible Kan.
The first book focusing on the subtleties of the Kan
Pros and cons of plans and set-ups discussed
Packed with recent ideas and analysis
International Master Ali Mortazavi is an experienced chess writer, whose work is published in magazines around the world. He is actively involved in electronic chess on the Internet and the World Wide Web. This is his first book for Batsford.
