Introduction

This semi-final of the 26 th USSR Championship was played in September/October 1958 with a strong field of young players making their names in the chess world.

The games were published in an edition of 8 copies by the Latvian Chess Federation (a top copy and 7 carbon copies, by the looks of things). I have copy number 3 but it is, unfortunately, missing a page (the pages are not bound). This page contains the end of game 32 plus the whole of games 33-35, which I have been unable to find elsewhere. In fact, I have been unable to find any report of the tournament in Shakhmatny Bulletin.

The draw was:

1 Korchnoi

2 Simagin

3 Peterson

4 Byvshev

5 Grushevsky

6 Gufeld

7 Osnos

8 Bastrikov

9 Shaposhnikov

10 Katalimov

11 Gipslis

12 Rubel

13 Geller

14 Vladimirov

15 Tarasov

16 Holmov

The top four finishers progressed to the 26 th Championship: Holmov, Geller, Korchnoi and Gufeld.
