With FIDE (the World Chess Federation) claiming that its Tournament in Libya - in fact, little more than a rapidplay open - was the world title clincher, this match for the Classical World Chess Championship would confirm one of the two mental matadors - Kramnik or Leko - as the legitimate heir of Steinitz, Alekhine, Fischer and Kasparov. Peter Leko, the Hungarian Grandmaster, qualified from the Dortmund Candidates' Tournament in 2002 to meet Vladimir Kramnik from Moscow, who had unseated Garry Kasparov in London 2000. Although both contenders were noted for their solidity, the clash tinned out to he a sporting classic, as Kramnik poured every ounce of energy into the last games in an effort to rescue his title.
In this book, Grandmaster Ray Keene OBE, Chess Correspondent for The Times, Sunday Times, Spectator and International Herald Tribune, argues that the true world championship goes back to Labourdonnais in 1834. He also supports Wilhelm Steinitz in his claim that his reign as champion should be dated from 1866, not 1886 as is usually stated. Apart from this controversial revisionism, Keene, himself an organiser of three world chess championships and two in draughts, publishes every game of the match in this souvenir edition supported by The Times and the Sunday Times, as well as furnishing deep notes to the most important encounters.
This book was edited by Dr. David Regis, a noted website author who has also published a number of chess books.
