Better Opening Play is written for those players who have basic knowledge of opening play, but need assistance in selecting an opening suitable to their style of play, that will remain playable for a long period of time, and will not require memorization of very extensive detailed analysis. There is a veritable flood of chess books published every year on the latest opening theory. Those books are by their nature designed for the strongest players at the highest levels. They do not meet the needs of the average player. Advancement of opening knowledge has resulted in very extensive analysis of many opening lines quite deep into the game. You will seldom if ever meet the Grandmasters who are capable of using such advanced knowledge, and in fact are capable of defeating the average player through overall strengths anyway. This book will greatly assist you in your games with a more reasonable study effort and provide the tools you need to be comfortable when you sit down to your next tournament game. Edmar Mednis is recognized world wide as a most capable chess teacher, and this book will help you advance your game.

The science of chess is forever advancing. This applies to all three parts: opening, middlegame and endgame. Of course it is the opening phase that bears the brunt of the advance. The reasons are clear also. Thanks to the worldwide enhancement of chess activity as the legacy of the 1972 Robert J. Fischer - Boris Spassky World Championship Match, there are both many more players over-all as well as more strong players. It is of course the stronger players that can be expected to carry the theoretical load. Moreover, there is much more available to be discovered at the start of the game than, say, at Move 60. Undeniably, the computer has been a fantastic help in assisting to evaluate and reevaluate opening variations.
The speed at which opening discoveries are made is phenomenal making it more and more difficult for the practical player. This means that the danger of errors cropping up in books as well as chess magazines is increasing also. The writer/author therefore must be rather selective in his choice of material to minimize the potential of errors.
There is a bit of a historical story on how this book came about. In early 1990 the then editor of Chess Life, Ms. Julie Anne Desch (now Julie Anne O'Neill), asked me to write a bi-monthly column on the openings. I was happy to do so and under the title, Opening Forum, it has been appearing ever since. This book is based on that material, corrected, enhanced and updated as required.
Readership of Chess Life is exceedingly diverse, stretching from GMs down to amateurs with only a 1000 rating. Therefore my major decision was how to be of use - as much as possible - to all of the membership. I decided to base my subject selections on these considerations:
(1) The most recent sharp, complicated, unclear variations have been ignored. These are meant for high speed computers to analyze.
(2) Emphasis should be on inherently strategic variations which are important, popular and have "stood the test of time" theoretically.
(3) The "age" of the variation is unimportant as long as it helps to further the theme of the chapter.
(4) To fully flesh out important subjects I provide detailed references. This gives the dedicated student the opportunity to enhance his understanding of the subject.
