In this book, after extensive research and analysis, I have tried to present an overall picture of the Ponziani opening. Besides opening variations relying on good examples from grandmaster games, I have presented the characteristics of typical middlegame and endgame derivations. In this book the reader can find numerous innovations, suggestions and own analysis. It contains previously unpublished chapters promted by new moves and revised judgements of familiar versions (Eg. chapter 2, A 7 Nc4 and chapter 6, IV 11 Bxa6).
The opening is named after the Italian chessmaster Domencio Lorenzo Ponziani (1719-1796). In 1782 he published a book of the openings he analysed "II Gioco Incomparibile Degli Scacchi". The one starting 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 c3 later became the Ponziani opening. At the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century the opening gained popularity appearing in competition thanks to Steinitz, Staunton, Chigorin and Tartakover. However it was then pushed into the background as the move 3... d5 was thought to be more favourable for black. Extended by new versions and ideas, the Ponziani opening was taken up again by, amongst others, grandmasters Velimirovich, Lyuboyevich, Miles and Chom and from the 1970s returned to chess played at the highest level. The Ponziani opening can particularly be recommended to players preferring half open positions which secure slight but permanent advantage.
I would like to express my thanks to all chess players - above all to Robert and Tamas Ruck - who contributed to the contents of this book with their games, analyses and suggestions. The reference work providing most of the ideas, suggestions and analyses was "Die Ponziani Eroffnung" by Smith & Ciamarra (Münster Verlag). In preparing and publishing this book I received much help from Ervin Haag, international master and master trainer, whose wide-ranging work speaks for itself with analyses, versions and innovations linked to his name. The arrangement of the contents and the structuring of this book together with the consciencious and accurate consultant work are due to him. Furthermore, I would like to express my gratitude to Laszlo Varecza for his selfless help in establishing the financial conditions for the publishing of this book.
