First published in 1982. This book contains an opening repertoire for both white and black that is designed to hit the opposition hard and precisely where it hurts. The author advocates blitzkrieg systems which are sound and do not involve excessive risk. He also shows how the apparently slow flank openings can be mobilised to greatest effect to score overwhelming knockouts. Openings covered for white include the Leningrad variation of the Nimzo Indian defence and the Samisch variation against the King's Indian defence. For black the sharp lines of the Caro Kann with ...Nf6 are considered.
Following the teachings of Grandmaster Emeritus Harry Golombek the games and variations are explained in depth. The reader is not required to memorise by rote endless variations of telephone directory print out. Once you have read this book you will be able to master and understand both the moves and the ideas behind the chosen lines.
General Introduction
The encyclopaedic approach to teaching openings has many virtues, but in this present book verbal explanations will feature foremost. The material is not comprehensive but selective. Each variation analysed will be chosen with an eye to individual style and the whole work will consist not just of specific variations but of general principles and illustrative games.
It is impossible to improve one's chess without memorising a certain number of variations but I have tried to avoid paths (such as the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence) which have been exhaustively mapped in modern chess. Instead I have concentrated on positional attacking plans. I have only given detailed analysis of comparatively new and unexplored lines which could prove useful surprise weapons to put one's opponent off his balance.
Many opening books are written like telephone directories - vast assemblages of moves and variations lacking any individual style or general advice. Even the words are, as if by magic, replaced by symbols and my impression is that readers can find it hard to relate to a highly concentrated mass of material which is in fact designed for an expert and specialised audience.
This attempt to reduce chess to a purely scientific treatment perhaps stems from the idea that chess is somehow allied to mathematics, but in my opinion a more fruitful approach to chess would be one more closely allied to poetry. Chess is much less exact than mathematics. It is a means of self-expression which gives scope for individual styles, often not based on pure logic, but at their best always creative. So this book is intended to help the sort of keen chessplayer who wishes to improve his game, or simply enjoy a personal study of some outstanding games.
This book should not be confused, though, with the 'complete repertoire' variety, such as An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player, which I co-authored with David Levy. Here we have a book of ideas, and I will be satisfied if it stimulates the reader's own imagination, without harnessing him to any kind of plan. It is aimed specifically at club, league and county players, and those who participate regularly in weekend Swiss events.
