First published in 1940. Arguably the strongest tournament of all time was AVRO 1938, held in The Netherlands. This competition contained no fewer than four past present and future world champions, while the players in this event continuously held the supreme title with just two one year breaks from 1921 to 1963.
In this book the Dutch World Champion Dr Max Euwe previews the AVRO Tournament and gives his insights into the particular strengths and weaknesses of such titans as Fine, Keres, Botvinnik, Alekhine, Capablanca and Reshevsky.
Dr Max Euwe is the only world champion to have come from Holland, where his triumph created something like nationwide chess fever. An apostle of order and logic, and a man possessed of a steely determination to win, Euwe seized the chess crown from the volatile Alekhine in 1935 - only to lose it back in the rematch of 1937. Nevertheless, Euwe held his own against such giants as Botvinnik, Fine, Fischer, Geller and Alekhine himself, in most cases giving as good as he got. Euwe went on to become president of FIDE, the World Chess Federation, and in this capacity he officiated at the celebrated 1972 championship between Fischer and Spassky. Euwe is the most active world champion on the Hardinge Simpole list, having written or contributed to no fewer than five titles, including Modern Chess Theory, Chess Treasury of the Air, WCC 1937, and My Best Games.

PREFACE
This is a translation of "Zoo Schaken Zij" ("They play chess like this") in which Dr. Euwe introduced the Dutch chess-playing public to the seven grand masters who were to participate with him in the famous A.V.R.O. tournament.
From the first we tried to keep close to his text, because it is so highly personal. Fate helped by losing our MS., which was addressed to us in Buenos Aires (where we were playing in the International Team Tournament) a few days before war broke out and has never been seen since. In correcting the proofs, we had consequently to refer back to the Dutch original throughout.
Herr Hans Kmoch rounded off "Zoo Schaken Zij" with a few paragraphs about Dr. Euwe himself, and this part of the book we have completely rewritten and greatly extended. It was almost impossible for Herr Kmoch to furnish anything his Dutch public did not already know; but we were in a very different position, and our British and American readers will be grateful for anything we can tell about Dr. Euwe. Our only further departure from the original is the addition of a few remarks about events subsequent to its publication.
Dr. Euwe has co-operated in the kind and warm-hearted manner typical of him. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. J. Creevey for ungrudging help the correction of the proofs, to which labour Messrs. R. Blow, W. Ritson Morry, T. C. M. Olsen, and G. P. Smith have also contributed a noble part.
