"Ok Geoff , it's the back of the book so think of something sensible to say."
"Chess was invented so this book could be written."
Geoff Chandler
"Forget it, just leave it to the experts."
Thirteen Scottish Masters have each selected five of their most entertaining and important games for inclusion in this book.
The authors have annotated the selected games in a highly original and humorous style - a style on which all future chess books will be judged.
While the main aim is to entertain, there is no denying the instructional value of this book. Both authors believe that education and enjoyment need not be mutually exclusive and that the best way to learn is while having fun.
All money raised from the sale of this book will go to Chess Scotland.

Foreword
Chess players are people. You might think that goes without saying, but thousands of chess books would suggest otherwise. The trouble is that we tend to take ourselves too seriously, and forget why we play the game. Accuracy is important, and I would not be a Grandmaster if I did not value it deeply, but enthusiasm, in the spirit of this gallus book, is what keeps the game alive.
You do not need to be a slave to accuracy to enjoy the beauty, tempo, and exquisite tension of the game. So while the analysis in Rampant Chess might give a 'pre Fritz/post pub' impression, the notes are refreshing, amusing, and, to coin a term that deserves currency beyond Edinburgh's chess-loving ale house, 'Sandybellish'.
Rampant Chess does not pretend to follow in the great Soviet tradition, heralding a Scottish school of chess, but it does celebrate some sparkling games with what might be considered a Scottish style of annotation. By this I mean an emphasis on openness rather than openings, informality in place of Informators, and instead of equal assessments we have a deep-rooted egalitarian sensibility, which means that no matter how exalted you think you are, people can make fun of you, frequently do, and you are not supposed to mind.
My own chess developed through knowing, enjoying, admiring and competing with the players celebrated here, but for now I can only offer the following glimpses to whet your appetite:
Paul Motwani's raspy voice gives him the loudest whisper in the world, Jacob Aagaard succeeds with a unique velvet hand in iron glove approach, and we all know that John Shaw would look better without his beard. Andrew Muir is notorious for counting cornflakes, Eddie Dearing is much more than Garfield with a law degree, and Steve Mannion begins his games as 'steady Steve' but can turn into 'sneaky Steve' when things go wrong. Douglas Bryson considers fianchettoes to be positionally dubious, while Colin McNab never met a fianchettoed bishop he didn't like. Keti's dignity and elegance away from the board is a disarming disguise for her brutality on it. Roddy McKay is a natural, with an enviable feel for where to put his pieces, Craig Pritchett taught me that defending could be as much fun as attacking, and without Mark Condie's timely story about what ducks do under the water, I would never have become a Grandmaster. Alas, there is no space to elaborate, but if you ever find me in Sandy Bells, I will explain.
The authors can speak for themselves, and do so rampantly in the pages that follow, so it just remains for me to say that if you are loitering at a bookstall, still wondering whether to buy this blessed tome, and fearing it may be rough around the edges, you should know that it quite rightly questions the validity of the edges. It is way out there on the I file, en route to the X-files, but I like it, and I hope you do too.
