In this book you will find 220 interesting and memorable games, transformed into test-games as well. Among the "dramatis personae", including Morphy, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Petrosian and Fischer, you can find many a notability of the past and the present, each of them epochmaking personalities. The games of the selection, supplemented with the creations of less known masters, have a feature in common: each of them have been won or, in some cases, saved by means of a sacrifice of the exchange.
There are many examples, showing how to apply a sacrifice of the exchange correctly and successfully. According to the analyses and observations of the chess trainer/author, a great number of games in tournament practice are lost or not won because of omitting to sacrifice the exchange!
It is hoped that this book will be instrumental in ensuring that this important but neglected area of chess tactics will have a more important role in the future.

----------------------
You are holding in your hand the third volume of the serial entitled Combinations for Learning and Teaching. This time I have chosen the sacrifice of the exchange as its subject - a tactical and strategical means, which although wellknown, is rarely taught methodically and still less systematically. After the favourable reception of the first edition published in German in 1999, this current volume has been both expanded and structurally modified.
After a careful analysis of thousands of games, in the course of which I have been searching for suitable educational examples to be included in this book, I can confidently state that players do sacrifice the exchange, but not as many times as they should. Directed by some inner fear, they do it rarely, even if victory would be attainable if they gave a Rook for a Knight or Bishop with an inhibition-free movement of the hand. In the overwhelming majority of cases, players sacrifice the exchange only under the pressure of the opponent's threats, virtually out of necessity, and even then they do not do it as frequently as they should. This is especially evident during the middle game, when headed for victory on a sure path. It would be possible - running but a minimal risk - to upset the equilibrium, and by doing so, obtaining a fair chance to win. As a matter of fact, strategically well-founded sacrifices of the exchange are, through their psychically surprising effect, important means of success.
This book consists of three parts. In the first part, the fully analysed games of Tigran Petrosian and Bobby Fischer introduce you to the wonderful world of the sacrifices of the exchange.
The middle part, presenting 140 games, demonstrates to those investigating the subject, the inexhaustible opportunities of the active and passive sacrifice of the exchange. We have not separated the two typical motifs within the passive sacrifice of the exchange, i.e. when offering the Rook to be taken or when leaving it to be taken. The latter is merited with increased attention, because the sacrificing party offers his Rook at the expense of gaining an important advantage in tempo.
As the subject of the book is given, contrary to the customary, now it is not a key move you must rack your brains about, but the strategic plan following the sacrifice of the exchange, or in simpler cases, about the series of exchanges. The editing is such that it makes analytical work possible, either directed by the trainer or done on your own, the latter being facilitated by short notes and commentaries. After a careful evaluation of the position and having formed your opinion, the conclusion of the games can be found in the supplement.
The first few games marked with an "A" make the idea of the sac-rifice of the exchange easy to understand, even for players with little education and playing strength. Therefore on the path leading from the simple to the complicated, less and less astonishment will be displayed when seeing the selfsacrifice of the Rook. Sacrifices of the exchange of a positional and more complex character are found in the games marked with a "B".
Starting from the realization that as a rule, the superiority of the Rook can be enforced only at the endgame, sacrifices of the exchange in the opening or at an early stage of the middle game are becoming more and more frequent. The primary aim is to seize the initiative, the momentum of which more than once shatters the opponent, as the sacrificing party is actually playing a piece ahead.
It is this range of the subject that the third part of this book puts in focus, presenting 70 games grouped according to Sicilian Defence and other openings. The high proportion of the games of Sicilian Defence may first of all be attributed to the sacrifices of the exchange on c3, which have become a real household word. Analysts who are more exacting can, of course, find other kinds of sacrifices of the exchange which are characteristic to certain openings alone.
I hope that by carefully studying this book you will gain pleasure and enjoyment, and will, last but not least, be encouraged to sacrifice the exchange more frequently in the future. But never forget: sometimes your opponent too, may put a minor piece before a Rook!
