Taken together, the two Alekhine-Euwe matches of 1935 and 1937 are arguably the most interesting and instructive matches ever contested. The reader will find them true "chess-thrillers" of the "I couldn´t put it down until I finished it" variety. In each, the lead changed I hands several times. There were smashing victories, hairbreadth escapes, overlooked opportunities, and even a few stunning double-blunders. Lines in the Slav Defense to the Queen's Pawn were debated by the players. Over and over, "improvements" were trumped by better "improvements" only to be turned around, by the loser, transforming himself into a winner with another "improvement!"
The chess was fighting chess, often truly awesome in its depth and subtlety. And at the end, in the 1937 match, Alekhine became the only player in all of world championship history to win the championship title by resigning the last game of the match!
Cecil Purdy was a most knowledgeable guide to everything that happens on and off the chessboard, and his notes to the games are models of the annotators' art. About the 1937 match, Purdy said, "For accuracy combined with entertainment, the match was probably the best played, the 1935 match coming a good second."
The 1972 Fischer-Spassky match was the "coronation" of Bobby Fischer, who for some years prior to 1972 was the unofficial "King of the chess world."

This work is an all-in-one-volume edited reissue (involving additions, deletions, and rearrangements) of three books by C J.S. Purdy: How Euwe Won (Australasian Chess Review, Sydney, 1936), The Return of Alekhine (Australasian Chess Review, Sydney, 1938), and How Fischer Won (E.J. Dwyer [Holdings], 1972).
The three World Championship Chess Matches-Alekhine-Euwe 1,1935; Alekhine-Euwe II, 1937; Fischer-Spassky I,1972-detailed here were milestones in the history of chess. The participants were each, at one time or another, World Chess Champions; and Alekhine and Fischer are near the top of almost all proposed lists of the ten greatest chess players of all time.
The matches were great sporting events, with fireworks both on and off the board. The games were fierce head-to-head struggles, and the quality of the play sometimes reached awesome levels.
Purdy is the ideal guide to it all. He comments on the play, on the players, on the critics, and on the chess world reaction to each match. Purdy's annotations are simultaneously entertaining, informative, and instructional.
Purdy was long of the opinion that an excellent way to improve one's own playing strength is to play over master games. Take the side of the winner, or either side if the game was a draw, and cover the moves with a card. When it is your player's turn to move, select a move based upon the position on the board; then uncover the actual game move. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of your move versus the game move, and absorb Purdy's comments where they appear. Proceed in this way through the entire game.
Cecil John Seddon (C.J.S.) Purdy (1906-1979) was four times Champion of Australia, an International Master, and the first World Correspondence Chess Champion. He published and edited what was arguably the premier chess journal of its day: Australasian Chess Review (1929-1944), Check (1944-1945), Chess World (1946-1967)-a continuing journal with an occasional name change. Purdy's game annotations and his writings on all aspects of chess have been widely praised. For some other books devoted to Purdy's chess writings, see the items listed in The Purdy Library of Chess at the end of this work.
