The Scandinavian Defence, previously thought to be a rather primitive and sub-standard response to 1 e4, has now emerged from the doldrums and been employed with success by some of the world's strongest Grandmasters, including Bent Larsen, Curt Hansen, Ian Rogers, Alexei Shirov and Vishy Anand.
The traditional form of the opening is 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qa5, with a subsequent deployment of Black's queen's bishop at f5 or g4, and indeed the current theoretical status of this line remains good. However, in recent years, many alterschemes have been tried. There has, for example, been a marked increase in the popularity of 3...Qd6!?, in conjuncwith a swift ...a6 and ...b5, or ...Bg4, ....Nc6 and ...0-0-0, and sometimes even a radically different middlegame from the stonewalling so frequently associated with the older type of Scandinavian middlegames. Recent play also suggests that 3...Qe5, cheekily dubbed The Patzer Variation', might also not be so naive.
Equally important are the latest lines arising from 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Nf6, including the dangerous Icelandic Gambit and the aggressive Portuguese Variation, which is currently at the cutting edge of chess theory.

Nach einem recht breit gestreuten Spektrum an Themen wendet sich der englische Verlag Batsford inzwischen auch wieder verstärkt der Eröffnungstheorie zu. Neben zwei weiteren Werken, die wir Ihnen in dieser Ausgabe vorstellen, wollen wir dabei auch noch auf das Buch „the scandinavian defence" hinweisen.
Darin untersucht der englische GM James Plaskett den aktuellen Stand der Dinge in dieser interessanten VerWie wir gleich sehen werdeckt der Autor dabei alle Bereiab, doch möchte ich schon jetzt auf die ungewöhnliche Gewichtung des Materials hinweisen.
Nach einem kurzen Abschnitt über 2.exd5 Dxd5 3.d4 folgt schon das Kapitel über die Hauptvariante 3.Sc3 Da5, die auf nur 21 Seiten überraschend kurz abgehandelt wird.
Die sich im Aufschwung befindliVariante 3...Dd8 wird danach auf 8 Seiten untersucht, während anschließend das größte Kapitel des Buches (51 Seiten) der Fortsetzung
3...Dd6 gewidmet ist. Bemerkenswert sind auch die im Vergleich zur Hauptstattlichen 11 Seiten, die der Autor der 'Patzer-Variante' 3...De5+ zugesteht.
Ein ähnliches Bild zeigt sich bei den Abspielen nach 2...Sf6. Auch hier gesteht Plaskett den Hauptvarian3.Lb5+ und 3.d4 Sxd5 zusammen gerade einmal 25 Seiten zu.
Beim Skandinavischen Gambit 3.c4 c6 wird verständlicherweise nur die Annahme untersucht, da eine Ablehin den Panow-Angriff der Caro-Kann-Verteidigung überleitet.
Das gefährliche Isländische Gambit 3.c4 e6 nimmt immerhin 13 Seiten ein, danach folgt das zweitgrößte Kades Buches über die PortugiesiVariante 3.d4 Lg4 (38 Seiten). Einige seltene Möglichkeiten werden im abschließenden zwölften Kapitel vorgestellt.
Aufgrund der genannten Aufteilung des Materials dürfte das Buch vor allem für Spieler interessant sein, die eine Vorliebe für die hier bevorzugt behandelten Varianten haben. Wer jedoch eine umfassende Skandina- Monographie erwartet dürfte angesichts der sehr knapp untersuchHauptvarianten etwas enttäuscht sein.
Daher möchte ich Sie schon vorab auf das Buch „the scandinavian, 2nd edition" von John Emms hinweisen, das bei Everyman Chess erschienen ist. Wir müssen dieses erst vor kurzem eingetroffene Buch leider bis zur nächsten Ausgabe zurückstellen.
Es hat bei Stichproben aber in puncto Aktualität, Übersichtlichkeit und vor allem Umfang und Analyse der Hauptvarianten deutlich besser abgeals Plasketts Buch.
