What is the best way to play a suit? In this thoroughly practical book double world champion Sally Brock shows that it is as much a matter of understandings as of memory. She looks at suit combinations in the context of the whole hand and also considers second-choice plays. Very often only a few percentage points separate the best and second-best line and extra information (whether from bidding or play) may give good reason to go for the 'theoretically anti-percentage' line.
The book first looks at the holdings missing only the jack; then the combinations get gradually worse until, in chapter 11, suits missing three honours are considered. The work is rounded off with some full deals. In each chapter seven-, eight- and nine card holdings are dealt with in turn and the reader is taken through the essential steps: counting winners and losers, working out he odds for the specific combination, looking at other factors, making a plan and, if necessary, revising the plan. If you consistently follow these steps, your play will rapidly improve.
Sally Brock has twice won both the World Championship and the European Championship. She is the author of the much-acclaimed book on Overcalls in the Step-by-Step series.
