Preface
This work records the results of the various chess competitions that took place all over the world from 1901 through 1920.
This volume is the result of years of research through the consultation of numerous newspapers and periodicals dating back throughout the period, tournament and match books, and general works on this topic. As time goes by lots of information is lost forever, and the aim of my work is to preserve it.
I sincerely thank Mr. Jeremy Gaige (for Chess Tournament Crosstables, Volume II [1901-1910], VolumeIII [1911-1920]) and Mr. P. Feenstra Kuiper (for Hundert Jahre Schachzweiämpfe, 1851-1950) since without their works this book would have never come to life. Their books have been out of print for a number of years.
This book contains 860 tournament crosstables (in Gaige's works there are only 775), 125 match crosstables (results given round by round), and 250 match results (where merely the total number of games won, lost and drawn for each player is reported).
The competitions are presented in chronological order and then by day and month if that Information is available. In parentheses I specify die countries where they were played and the sponsoring groups - when known - (e.g., British Chess Federation, German Chess Federation and so on) are reported right after the years. Besides individual tournaments, the reader can also find the main team events. I have excluded correspondence events (I did cite one or two when famous players competed) and women's competitions.
I give each player's last and, when availfirst name; moreover I have standardized them.
The book contains a bibliography of sources and two indexes: of events, year by year (and alphabetical within years), and of players.
I have done my best to present a work that can become the standard reference book for anyone who loves the history of chess and is interested in researching the chess careers of the players of the past (the celebrated as well as the less well-known).

Entries record location and, when available, the sponsor. First names of players are included whenever possible; names are standardized. Compiled from contemporary sources such as newspapers, periodicals, tournament records and match books, this work contains 860 tournament crosstables and 375 match scores. It is indexed by events and players.
