There are no books which give you a systematic approach to playing 3-stone handicap games. This void is filled by Galactic GO. Galactic GO takes off where Cosmic GO left you. The first volume in this four volume series systematically teaches you how to play a 3-stone handicap game when White places the first move on the 3-4 point and Black replies with a knight's approach move. This book contains many new josekis and shows you how you should change existing josekis when you already have three stones placed on the star points.
Whether your rank is 4-kyu or 4-dan, Galactic GO will guide your intuition to develop a whole board vision, sharpen a keen sense of direction, spot sparkling tesujis and make shape in various stages of the game. Developing thickness, and using that thickness to attack your opponent, is a recurrent theme in the twenty chapters. Each joseki is analyzed in the context of a game with more than 400 full board analyses. Study Galactic GO diligently and you will be taking only two stones from your opponents who have routinely given you a higher handicap.

261 About the Authors
A word about how to use the book
Black's moves in these twenty games are of uneven quality and sometimes Black makes a blunder. Black has taken three stones because he is the weaker player! But we want to show you how to move forward from a blunder without turning it into a series of blunders. The best use of the book will be made if you actually place the stones on the board and answer the problems as you study.

Each chapter contains many problems, followed by discussions of both right and wrong answers, with special emphasis on the direction of play. As the handicap stones decrease in number, the efficiency of the Black stones must increase. This increase in efficiency must come primarily from an understanding of the correct direction of play. As you read each chapter, please be sure to answer the questions on your own before looking at the solutions. This is the only way you are going to develop a true instinct for the correct plays. The book should be interesting to players whose Go strength ranges from 4 kyu to 4 dan.

We will assume that you have studied Cosmic Go. If you know how to make thickness when you have a four-stone handicap, then you would naturally think about making thickness using three handicap stones. Please write to us with your comments about our work - its strengths, its weaknesses, and with specific suggestions for changes in future editions. For now, we wish you a very happy journey in the galaxy of the Go board.
