In the absence of an experienced coach who can guide you through those steps, a chess player may spend weeks studying the Ruy Lopez, yet he or she may not fully understand the strategic ideas behind long variations. That challenge is now solved by Grand Master Dariusz Swiercz with the book you have just opened. I have known Dariusz for several years since we both immigrated to the United States. As colleagues and friends, I have become acquainted with his high-quality chess preparation. His opening ideas, always backed up by thorough analysis with trusted engines, are original and sound. Dariusz has used that principled approach to cover all variations of the Ruy Lopez. His dedication to providing you a quality guidance has been very impressive in this book. He does not shy away from complications or from sharing his own novelties. In critical positions, he explains very well the ideas and plans for both sides, which should help you gain a deeper understanding of the system beyond memorization of the moves.

Wann hat es so ein Großprojekt zum letzten Mal gegeben? Wahrscheinlich seit Alexander Khalifmans 13-bändiger 1.e4-Bibel. Für 1.e4 e5 hatte der Khalif ebenfalls zwei Bände benötigt, so wie das neue Werk aus dem Haus Thinkers Publishing jetzt. Der in St. Louis lebende Großmeister Dariusz Swiercz gilt als einfallsreicher Theoriehai, sehr oft kommt er gut aus der Eröffnung heraus.
Wie gewohnt hat der Verlag das Material sehr übersichtlich aufgebaut, und Swiercz wirbt (ebenso wie das Buch ”Caruana’s Ruy Lopez“) darum, Italienisch, Läuferspiel, Schottisch und der dergleichen nicht aus der Not heraus zu spielen, weil Marshall-Angriff und Berliner Mauer den Spanier unspielbar gemacht haben.
Von den beiden genannten ist nur die Berliner Variante im ersten Band behandelt, neben den seltenen Abspielen und dem Offenen Spanier. Zur Berliner Verteidigung bietet Swiercz auch gleich zwei Abspiele an: 4.0-0 nebst Te1 und 4.d3. Auch wenn man kein Experte in der Berliner Verteidigung ist: die Fülle an angebotener Information ist merklich. Auch im Offenen Spanier bietet Swiercz zwei Abspiele an: 8.Sxe5 als Überraschungsabspiel und das normale 8.exd5, und da steckt natürlich mehr Wumms dahinter. Der polnische Großmeister hat zum Beispiel dieses Nebenabspiel 8.Sxe5 weitaus tiefer analysiert als zum Beispiel David Antón in seinem Chessable-Kurs. Gleich danach gab es eine Schnellpartie von Nakamura gegen Mamedyarov zu diesem Thema.
