This is the first book to be published by Michael Redmond 9 Dan, the preeminent American professional Go player. It is based on an award winning TV series Redmond presented on Japanese national television and was first published in Japanese in 2001. The book is characterized by the clarity, lucidity, and thoroughness Redmond is known for, and emphasizes the importance of understanding principles rather than merely memorizing sequences.

Redmond focuses on the positions that arise when attacking and defending a stone on the 4-4 point. Much of the book examines this situation in handicap games, and special consideration is given to the various possible double approach moves by White and how Black should respond to each of them.

Redmond aims at a broad audience, laying down the fundamental principles of sound play and showing how these apply in a thorough and detailed way. As a result the book will be especially valuable to relatively weaker players, who will learn the proper foundations for successful strategy, and it will also be very helpful to stronger players, who will fill in the gaps in their understanding.

I'm often asked, "How can I get stronger?"
There are a number of ways to improve, such as studying joseki or life and death problems, but the most enjoyable, yet most difficult, aspect of go is fighting. There are hardly any games in which a fight does not occur. Yet unlike the opening or the endgame, in fighting the exact same position hardly ever occurs twice, which makes fighting harder to study.
We all have our strengths and weaknesses: some people are no good at attacking, others neglect defense. But neither continually attacking nor defending all the time will succeed. Fighting calls for both attack and defense.
Understanding and mastering the correct way to think about fighting is the key to successful middlegame play. The flow of a game will depend on the plans you develop during a fight.
In this book, in order to give you an understanding of how to think about fighting, the ABC's of attack and defense are spelled out in easy to understand terms. I'm sure this will help your play.
If you find a tactic that you like, be sure to try it out in your games. If you try it a number of times, your understanding will improve dramatically, and you can decide for yourself if it matches your style.
Your opponent may respond differently, so play may not follow the lines given in the book, but even if you can't play out the variation you've learned, it will help you to have started the fight with a con-crete set of moves in mind.
At any rate, I hope that all of you will be able to get stronger while enjoying the game.
